Depressing stories are a dime a dozen these days, but I think the most depressing quote in a news story comes from the Valley News reporting on the fact that the emerald ash borer, an incredible destructive invasive beetle, has finally shown up in Vermont:
“This is going to kill the ash trees and there’s no solution and there’s no fix and there’s no silver lining to the dark cloud,” Orange County Forester David Paganelli said. “It’s just a dark cloud.”
Yeah, that’s about right: Northern America’s ash trees are pretty much doomed.
EAB showed up in New Hampshire in 2013 and is now found in at least 42 towns and cities.
