The 1988 book “The Society of Mind” by MIT’s Marvin Minsky was my first introduction to the world of artificial intelligence – and judging from this piece in BoingBoing, I’m not alone. Minsky died Monday at age 88 (obit here).

Even if AI hasn’t exactly blossomed the way Minsky through it would, he’s still a seminal figure whose work is reasonably accessible to the rest of us. But I didn’t realize until I saw the BoingBoing piece that he has a “Society of Mind” course as part of MIT’s free OpenCourseware program. This isn’t a MOOC or other organized online course; rather, it puts all the lectures and some course material online for you to do with as you wish.
