Back in 1918, the excuse for downplaying a growing public-health crisis was World War I – didn’t want to hurt the war morale, and then we had to turn buildings in downtown Concord into emergency hospitals. I wrote about it for the Monitor.
This year, the excuse was … I don’t know what, exactly. But they’re putting up tents as an emergency hospital in New York’s Central Park.

This year, the excuse was…is…politically charged, even though it’s really a cultural thing. Like tolerating mass shootings, carrying on extended wars to stop evil communism, driving big pickup trucks, and staring at cell phones everywhere we walk.
