Virtual Beach is an EPA-developed software package that correlates various environmental factors to make predictions about E. coli outbreaks in seawater. New Hampshire is using it and testing automated buoys on two lakes to see if we can better predict outbreaks in fresh water, before people dive in and gulp some of the nasty stuff down.

The subject was covered in this perfectly reported prose poetry that was published in the Concord Monitor while I was on vacation, which is why I’m only drawing attention to it now.
