A couple of years ago, Science Cafe New Hampshire tackled the subject of the damage that cats do to wildlife. They do a lot of damage – cats are awesome hunters – and the message was “cat owners, keep your cats indoors”.

We didn’t go much into the subject of feral, or wild, cats but Australia has. They plan to kill as many as 100 million feral cats to protect endangered species. Some celebrities are outraged, but I think it’s a reasonable move.

In case you’re wondering, we own a cat, and have owned many over the years, and I like cats a lot. But life requires choices.

Speaking of feline death and public outrage, a Danish zoo is going ahead with plans to invite the public, including kids, to watch the dissection of a dead lion as part of its educational mandate. (Story is here.) Excellent idea.
