The ice runway on Lake Winnipesaukee’s Alton Bay has opened for the season. It’s the only FAA-approved runway on ice in the lower 48 states.

AOPA, the Airline Aircraft Owners and Pilot’s Association, loves this place. AOPA is the main organization for private pilots, the sort of folks who fly for the proverbial “hundred-dollar burger” – that is, you fly to another airport, have lunch and fly back just because you like to fly.  Lots of them come to Alton Bay just to say they’ve landed on ice.

AOPA has a write-up about visiting it (read it here). It includes this advice: “Expect the braking action to be poor to nil, and plan on a long rollout. A light dusting of snow will improve braking. Work on your short landing techniques.”
