The collapse of the American recycling industry has made me face what has been true all along: Recycling is a band-aid at best and a distraction at worst. This is depressing because I’ve been something of a recycling rock star and feeling very impressed with myself over it.
Ah, well – we’re grown-ups, right? We face reality.
I chew on this to more detail in my Monitor column today: You can read it right here.
Addendum: The lament laments the lack of ways to recycle if your town gives up – but I’ve had calls today pointing out that some charities collect material for recycling. It’s spotty and material-specific, but try checking around.
