Over the years I have occasionally glimpsed a scurrying weasel-like shape that might be a fisher but I can’t say with certainty that I’ve ever seen one, much to my annoyance.
These elusive beasts are the subject of a $2 million grant to NH Fish and Game from the federal Wildlife Restoration Program to focus on the fur-bearing species, which can legally be trapped and hunted in the state.
“Management “ of fisher and human expectations is the perspective of NHF&G. It is time to move beyond this antiquated concept. Wildlife manages just fine if humans stay out of the way. Management is maintaining a population so they may be hunted or trapped.
Fisher are wonderful predators, perfectly designed for climbing trees and traveling on top of snow. NHF&G should use the money to educate humans on why the fisher is an important animal in our area.
