The New Hampshire state Senate on Thursday put the kibosh on one of the silliest (IMHO) ideas floating around these days: Improving our health and productivity by moving coastal New England states into Atlantic standard time, the zone used by Nova Scotia and most other Maritime provinces. This would end the twice-annual daylight savings switcheroo and put our clocks closer to normal patterns of sunlight in the winter, for certain definitions of normal.
The Massachusetts legislature is considering it; the Maine legislature has said it will move if Massachusetts does (nobody in New England wants to be in a different time zone than Boston) and the Rhode Island legislature is considering it, too. The N.H. House passed the proposal last month, much to my surprise, but the Senate killed it as I report today.
There’s something about time zones, and particularly about the daylight savings switch, that gets some people all worked up.
