The essence of local journalism is the cop story – a story about an arrest or crime in the area, often a rewrite of a press release or a story taken from the police log (although most police logs have been truncated to the point that this doesn’t work well any more).

Well, this is the best cop story of the year, in the opinion of this aging guy who owns two stick-shift vehicles: A 20-year-old tried to steal a car but was caught because he didn’t know how to drive a manual transmission. Hahahahahaha!

You can read it here.

Stick shifts are a pain in the neck in heavy traffic, but I admit I still like them on the open road. However, we mostly own them because we always buy used cars and manual transmission cars are cheaper, presumably because fewer and fewer people know how to drive them: Only about 3% of new cars are sold with stick shifts.
